We are in the middle of what I call a meditation bonanza, you can find books/cd's and webcasts everywhere. I think this is wonderful because in a lot of ways we are so busy in life or in trying to fix ourselves that we have often lost our ways and to me introspection through things like meditation are a beneficial tool.
I am currently giving a once a week session on relaxation/meditation at the place I volunteer at and I find it interesting the notions that people carry with them around what it means to meditate.
99% of the time people think off transcendental meditation (TM) when they think meditation. I teach relaxation and visualization for the busy the stressed and the over tired population because if you are interested in TM then it require incredible focus and commitment than most people have.
So I teach the easy methods we can all do to chill and to refocus our energies with.
We all breath, we do it naturally and without thought, and breathe work is the bases for all meditation's that are taught that I know of, so I always start with teaching a breath based relaxation technique as everyone can do it.
breath in through your nose and push your breathe into your stomach to a count of 8
expel breath to a count of 8
repeat 3 times
now sit down comfortably and close your eyes and as you breath normally put a 'mantra' to your breathing
think ' IN' with every in breath and 'OUT' with every out breathe ( simple right)
this is to give your busy mind a focal point so that it doesn't get talkative.
Simple easy and do-able. This is my second point you do not have to be in a relaxed meditative start for long periods of time 10 or 15 mins is quiet enough to begin with or when you are so busy or overwhelmed,to settle you down and make you feel relaxed and refreshed.
So I encourage you to give yourself 10 minutes today to breath and relax...your day your health and your life will benefit in ways that may amaze you.
